Paru en 1997 cet ouvrage passionnant, excitant pour l'esprit, décline en détaillant précisément les éléments déjà exposés dans ses deux précédents petits manuels : "1089 and all that" et "The calculus story - a mathématical ouverture." Mais il s'agit cette fois-ci d'un véritable cours de mathématiques et parfois d'Analyse et de Physique, qui permet de découvrir et même d'apprendre, pourvu que l'on aime améliorer son propre Qi. The book covers simple ordinary differential equations, coupled oscillation, numeric methods, planetary motion, chaos and much more. Most people will need no more - unless you are deep into, say, simulation of chemical reaction in catalyst pellet or similar. The book assumes that you are well into algebra and geometry and often jump over intermediate results. this is an excellent discussion of differential equations from a historical point of view. the author is an experienced applied mathematician, and he introduces ideas about "phase space" and non-linearity early and often. unfortunately this book went out of print fairly quickly. there is an excellent companion text, on fluid dynamics .
